About this ride

This is the training-camp option on Ride Madrid: three days in the Pyrenees, 320 km in total and 7,400 m of climbing, ridden over mountain passes with a van following the group. Nights are in a hotel, and a mechanic is on hand so a broken gear cable or a flat does not end your camp.

Unlike the Madrid day rides, this one means travelling out of the city to the mountains. It is also the biggest effort on the site by a wide margin. Averaged over the three days, that is roughly 107 km and about 2,470 m of climbing each day, with little flat ground to recover on.

Compare it with the Madrid big climb morning, which gives you one hard climb in a half day. The camp asks you to repeat that kind of effort on consecutive days. It suits experienced riders who want volume, altitude gain and full support, and who are happy to rest, eat and sleep between stages.

  • 320 km over three days in the Pyrenees
  • 7,400 m of climbing on mountain passes
  • Van following the group each day
  • Hotel nights and a mechanic on hand
  • For experienced riders only

Who this camp suits

This is a hard, multi-day ride, and it is not a place to find out whether you enjoy long climbs. You should already be comfortable riding several hours in a day, and ideally have done back-to-back long rides before. Riders who regularly manage 100 km with serious climbing will get the most from it.

If you are newer to cycling, the Madrid riverside gravel intro or the Madrid greenway easy day are better starting points. Build up through those before attempting 7,400 m in three days.

What the three days look like

The Pyrenees give you long mountain passes rather than short, sharp hills. With 320 km and 7,400 m across three days, expect most of each day to be spent either climbing or descending, with the van following behind.

The climbing is spread across all three days, so fatigue builds. Pace the first day rather than racing it. The exact stages, passes and daily distances depend on the route the partner runs, so check them when booking and look at the day-by-day split before you commit.

Van support, hotel and mechanic

The van follows the ride, which means you can carry less, take layers for cold summits and get a lift if a day goes badly. Nights are spent in a hotel, so you can wash, eat properly and sleep before the next stage.

A mechanic is part of the package. On a trip of this length, with long descents and steady wear on brakes and gears, that matters more than it does on a half-day ride. Bring your own pedals, shoes, helmet and kit, and ask the partner whether bike hire is available.

How it compares with other Ride Madrid tours

The Madrid big climb morning is the closest in spirit: hard, climb-focused, and aimed at performance. The camp stretches that into three days and adds support and accommodation. The Costa Brava coast road ride is also a long trip away from Madrid, but it is a single day on tarmac by the sea, with far less climbing.

Choose the Pyrenees camp if you want a proper block of mountain riding. Choose a Madrid day ride if you want to ride and be home the same evening.
